Adults can spend about 60% or more of their waking hours at the workplace. During that time, they may eat a meal and snacks. Though the meal may be brought from home, the snacks would be mostly an indulgence - chips, samosa etc. Many times, people eat lunch out as well and end up eating food that may be high in calories.

The key is to embrace healthier eating habits at work. Maulik Mistry, creator of a brand of healthy energy bars opines, “Healthy eating habits enhances brain cell development, improves productivity and performance and reduces stress levels. It keeps you not just physically, but mentally active and helps you achieve your goals in life. Hippocrates has said, 'Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’.”

Increasing the availability of healthy food at the workplace is a great way to encourage employees to move their dietary habits in the right direction. A stock of fruit in the pantry as opposed to potato chips can make all the difference to a person’s health if he/she is snacking every day. Fitness trainer Madhur Kohli says, “Roasted snacks, such as peanuts or gram or products such as granola bars that are readily available in the market are much better than having anything fried like chips.”

Madhur Kohli explains, “The habit of having heavy meals means a person will feel fatigued afterwards as the body redirects energy to digest heavy food. It is better to have smaller, more nutritious meals for increased focus and energy to spend on work.”

A more nutritious diet will improve energy levels, can raise productivity and ensures that you are less susceptible to illnesses. People suffering from high blood pressure and aches and pains will find their body respond to healthy eating by healing.

Making informed food choices is one of the keys to increasing productivity at the workplace. Of course, it is important to remember, healthy eating should also be complemented with adequate exercise for best results.

To conclude, Maulik Mistry lists some of the most effective ways to eat healthy and boost your productivity at work:

  1. Start your day with a wholesome breakfast every morning.
  2. Eat small and frequent meals throughout the day. One should eat atleast 4-5 meals a day.
  3. Keep a small snack with you at all times, for your hunger cravings. Some of the worse decisions are made when you are hungry at work, so plan your meals well in advance.
  4. Eat whole fruits, grains, nuts that give you a good balance of nutrition. Read ingredient labels and look for options that are a good source of fibre, protein, complex carbohydrates, omega 3s, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
  5. Keep yourself hydrated. Men should drink about 3 litres of water, while women should consume atleast 2.2 litres every day.
